What happens when history, creativity, and technology come together in one classroom? At McKinley Magnet Elementary School of Arts and Communication, something pretty amazing happened.

This spring, Grade 2 and 3 students embarked on a hands-on STEAM journey that transformed history lessons into something they could design, hold, and proudly showcase. With the guidance of passionate STEAM teacher Miss Hawkins, McKinley Magnet partnered with Little You 3D to introduce students to the exciting world of 3D design and printing in a way that felt fun, accessible, and inspiring.

And the results? Fifty young learners designed their own historical figurines, brought them to life through 3D printing, and proudly displayed them in the school museum. Suddenly, history wasn’t just something students read about, it became something they could create and experience firsthand.

Making 3D Printing Easy (and Fun!) for Young Learners

Introducing 3D printing to younger students can feel intimidating. While many McKinley students were already familiar with tools like Tinkercad, designing human characters seems a bit too advanced for their age group. That’s where Little You 3D made all the difference.

Instead of struggling through complicated modelling software, students were able to jump straight into the creative process using an intuitive, kid-friendly platform designed specifically for younger learners. With easy customization options, students could focus less on technical challenges and more on bringing their historical characters to life.

For Miss Hawkins, Little You 3D became the perfect gateway into 3D printing. For students, it became a meaningful way for them to connect with history. As they customized their historical characters, they became more curious, engaged, and excited about the stories behind them. Learning became more meaningful because students were actively participating in it.

From Digital Design to Real-Life Figurines

The classroom buzzed with excitement as students began designing their figurines using Little You 3D. Every choice from hairstyles to outfits and accessories became part of the storytelling process.

But the magic really happened when those digital creations turned into physical objects.

Using a Dremel 3D printer, Miss Hawkins brought the students’ creations to life, printing the figurines at 200% scale to make them easier for students to use during classroom skits. Seeing their ideas transform into something real was a huge moment for the kids, as if by magic, the characters they had imagined were standing right in front of them.

A Classroom Favourite

It didn’t take long for the project to become one of the students’ favourite classroom experiences.

The figurines weren’t just displayed, students used them as props in skits, helping historical storytelling come alive in a whole new way. What started as a technology lesson quickly turned into an engaging mix of creativity, collaboration, storytelling, and hands-on learning.

The grey filament even gave the figurines a timeless, “historical statue” feel. While painting the models had originally been planned, students ended up taking them home to personalize, extending the learning and creativity beyond the classroom walls.

And perhaps the best part? Students were genuinely excited to learn.

More Than Just 3D Printing

This project wasn’t only about technology.

By designing and holding physical representations of historical figures, students built a stronger emotional connection to what they were learning. History became something tangible, something they could see, touch, and share.

Along the way, students also strengthened valuable future-ready skills like:

  • Creative thinking

  • Problem solving

  • Collaboration

  • Digital literacy

  • Storytelling and communication

They even gained early exposure to real-world concepts behind 3D printing, like model orientation, support material, and the printing process, all while having fun.

What We Learned (And What’s Next!)

This collaboration was just as exciting for the Little You 3D team as it was for the students.

Working closely with Miss Hawkins gave us incredible insights into how educators are using technology in the classroom and how we can make our platform even better for younger learners. We will continue to improve the experience,  making it smoother, faster, and even more engaging for both teachers and students.

We also learned more about the challenges teachers face when printing in the classroom. Desktop printers often mean long print times and limited production capacity, especially for larger groups of students.

That’s where Little You 3D can help.

With our industrial-grade full-color 3D printing technology, schools can bring entire classrooms of student creations to life faster and at scale, opening the door to even bigger classroom projects and more creative possibilities.

The Impact of Little You 3D

When students can create something with their own hands, learning sticks differently.

Projects like this spark curiosity, build confidence, and help students see themselves as creators, inventors, and storytellers. Instead of simply learning history, McKinley students brought it to life through creativity and technology.

That’s the power of meaningful STEAM education.

And the best part? This is only the beginning. We’re excited to hear that McKinley Magnet Elementary School plans to bring this project back and expand it to even more grades!
